Unlimited source of energy Paper details: Information Needed for Assignment: Homeostasis refers to the resistance to change (Alcorn, 2003). It is a desire to maintain status quo. There are many reasons for technological homeostasis. One reason is the fear of the unknown. Human beings tend to avoid change to avoid the unknown. A second reason is anxiety and adjustment. Fortunately, humans have a large supply of defense mechanisms to deal with anxiety. One of those is resistance. A third reason is psychophysiological restructuring. Our brain stores knowledge along certain paths. As we age, those paths become more rigid allowing for less restructuring thus less adapting to new concepts or technology. Finally, specialization, breaking up the labor among a large number of people allows each person to become an expert in their part of the labor, spurs a separation of understanding. It creates a separation between those who understand the science and those who don’t understand it (the general public). Paper Prompt: Suppose tomorrow, scientist creates a new unlimited source of energy. This energy uses natural resources with byproducts that are organic and reusable. What resistant factors would be present in society? Explain your stance. Citation: Alcorn, P.A. (2003). Social issues in technology: A format for investigation (4th ed). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Publishing. Criteria: Essay is to be 250 - 500 words. Essay uses two or three reasons for resistance to new technology Essay clearly applies reasons society may be resistant to this technology. Essay is to be APA 6th edition formatting including a title page, reference page, double spaced, in-text citations. NO abstract is required. Essay is college level writing.

Department of Criminology: BA Security and Risk Management : Select ONE of the following essay topics: Critically evaluate concepts relating to: 1) Team work; OR 2) Leadership and management. Make reference to your own work experiences when engaging with these topics. Please note that for this particular assessment – because it is a reflective account - it is appropriate for you to write in the first person (for example, using personal pronouns such as ‘I’ and ‘my’). Depending on which topic you select, aim to cover the following points in your reflective account: 1) For the TEAM WORK option: ? Explore, critically, theories surrounding teams and effective team working. ? Identify, with reference to at least one example from current or recent experience, the principles and theories that, in your opinion, underpin effective team working. ? Demonstrate, with reference to at least one example, an awareness of your own team role(s). ? Describe, with reference to examples, one or more team context in which you currently work or have worked in the past. ? Reflect, critically, on your strengths and weaknesses as a team member. ? Although this is a reflective account, it remains an academic assessment; therefore, your account should be well-structured with an introduction, main body and conclusion, and your arguments should be effectively and clearly articulated. The writing should be accurate, proof-read, with appropriate references and reference list. *** 2) For the LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT option: ? Explore, critically, arguments surrounding distinctions between leadership and management. ? Demonstrate a strong understanding of key concepts relating to leadership and management. ? Demonstrate, with reference to at least one example, an awareness of your own leadership style ? Describe, with reference to examples, one or more management context in which you currently work or have worked in the past. ? Reflect, critically, on your strengths and weaknesses as a manager. ? Although this is a reflective account, it remains an academic assessment; therefore, your account should be well-structured with an introduction, main body and conclusion, and your arguments should be effectively and clearly articulated. The writing should be accurate, proof-read, with appropriate references and reference list.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE The Functions of Culture First, culture has a boundary-defining role: It creates distinctions between one organization and others. Second, it conveys a sense of identity for organization members. Third, culture facilitates commitment to something larger than individual self-interest. Fourth, it enhances the stability of the social system. Culture is the social glue that helps hold the organization together by providing standards for what employees should say and do. Finally, it is a sense-making and control mechanism that guides and shapes employees’ attitudes and behavior. This last function is of particular interest to us. Culture defines the rules of the game. Today’s trend toward decentralized organizations makes culture more important than ever, but ironically it also makes establishing a strong culture more difficult. When formal authority and control systems are reduced, culture’s shared meaning can point everyone in the same direction. However, employees organized in teams may show greater allegiance to their team and its values than to the organization as a whole. In virtual organizations, the lack of frequent face-to-face contact makes establishing a common set of norms very difficult. Strong leadership that communicates frequently about common goals and priorities is especially important in innovative organizations. Individual–organization “fit”—that is, whether the applicant’s or employee’s attitudes and behavior are compatible with the culture—strongly influences who gets a job offer, a favorable performance review, or a promotion. It’s no coincidence that Disney theme park employees appear almost universally attractive, clean, and wholesome with bright smiles. The company selects employees who will maintain that image. On the job, a strong culture supported by formal rules and regulations ensures employees will act in a relatively uniform and predictable way. Culture Creates Climate If you’ve worked with someone whose positive attitude inspired you to do your best, or with a lackluster team that drained your motivation, you’ve experienced the effects of climate. Organizational climate refers to the shared perceptions organizational members have about their organization and work environment. This aspect of culture is like team spirit at the organizational level. When everyone has the same general feelings about what is important or how well things are working, the effect of these attitudes will be more than the sum of the individual parts. One meta-analysis found that across dozens of different samples, psychological climate was strongly related to individuals’ level of job satisfaction, involvement, commitment, and motivation. A positive overall workplace climate has been linked to higher customer satisfaction and financial performance as well. 9. Categorize your current or past organization into one (1) of the five (5) most prevalent ethical climates discussed above. Analyze whether it is a centralized or decentralized structure. Examine the impact that the selected ethical climate and structure has on the organization’s culture
