Production Review

Overview: Writing a critique of a play encourages the viewer to look at the production from a critical viewpoint. This viewpoint is necessary when considering theatre as art.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to help students identify and write about key aspects of staged theatrical productions while encouraging critical thought.

Directions:

1. Attend a performance—Save the ticket stub and program and any other proof that you attended the play.

2. Write the review—The most important part of this exercise is to give your opinion and then support it with examples from the production. The review must include the title of the play, the author, and the production’s location. The review must have an introduction and a conclusion. Other elements you may want to address (these are only suggestions):
• Major themes
• Differences between the staged version and the text (if you have read the play)
• What you thought the director or actors or designers were trying to achieve and whether they did or not
• Ideas for improvement
• A critique of the acting including standout (good or bad) performances
• Audience reaction
• Other elements—sound, set, costumes, makeup, choreography, music, dance, language, etc.
• Would you recommend the play to others? Why or why not?

Length: 2 to 3 pages (600 to 800 words)
All written assignments in this class should:
• Be typed in Times New Roman font (size 12)
• Be double spaced
• Include your name, class, date, and title
• Have reasonable margins (reasonable means the Word default: 1” top and bottom and 1.25” left and right)
• Use some system for notation (MLA, Chicago, etc.)

• B—Clearly articulated review that does not meet the length and/or formatting requirements
• C—Poorly written review that meets the length and formatting requirements
• D—Poorly written review that does not meet the length and formatting requirements
• F— Late assignment, no answer, totally off topic, etc.
We were told to go see the play the Temptest by William Shakespear in Manhattan. I did not see the play, so I am acting as if I did see it. Please, read about the play and watch viideos and youtube.
