This question affords students a wide opportunity to examine the causes of World War II in a deeper or broader sense than just citing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Who were the countries that initiated the war? Why did they do so? What was the course of the early war? What was the initial American position? Why did America join the war, and what was its overall goal?
