The author suggests that the cultural narrative provided for women at midlife is either medical/menopause
oriented or socially devaluing (e.g., empty nester, a fertility has-been, abandoned for a younger woman,
depressed). Without alternative images, these demoralizing cultural stereotypes can become a self-fulfilling
prophecy. Discuss McQuaide’s arguments. Answer some of the following questions in a 700-800 word
response:

  1. What could be done on a personal, societal, and governmental level to change women’s experiences of
midlife? Do you think that things have improved or gotten worse since McQuaide wrote this article? Are there
aspects of McQuaide’s argument with which you do not agree? What follow-up research would you like to see
done in response to this article?
  2. Do the experiences described in the Wall Street Journal article apply to a small part of the population? Why
    or why not?
  3. Does research on midlife ignore the diversity of experiences that people have? How could we expand the
ways we think and talk about midlife experiences for people regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation,
or other identities? Clear suggestions and recommendations are important here.
  4. You do not need to address all of the questions listed above. Focus on the ones that you have a strong
opinion about or that you are most interested in discussing.
  5. Feel free to develop different discussion comments based on the resources and materials that are posted in
the module. For example, you could discuss experiences of sexism in the workplace (When Sexism Sounds
    Friendly Scientific American)
  6. Provide two or more sources in APA citation style that you used to construct your argument. These could
include the textbook, the 2 articles above, or other sources.
