Environmental science research has great potential to contribute to government policy, the economy and human well-being. This can range from informing site specific policy and habitat management on a nature reserve to helping to shape high-level policy informing adaptation to climate change. What information do policy makers need? It is not enough to simply make research findings available to policy makers - they need to be able to understand the implications and what action they made need to take. Not all policy makers are trained Environmental Scientists and they all have many other demands on their time. Policy makers need the research context, findings, limitations and implications to be distilled in to key, easy to understand ‘take home’ messages in documents that take a few minutes to read. Scientific evidence can inform policy, but it does not dictate it. Decisions are based on a number of factors (e.g. time frame, budget allocation, economic impact etc.) of which scientific evidence is one component. Presenting a clear and concise message is key to ensure important research is able to be considered alongside other concerns.
