What the Nobel Peace Prize Truly Values,”

What the Nobel Peace Prize Truly Values,” Order Description   What the Nobel Peace Prize Truly ValuesBy Peter Faulk (October, 2016)Should the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded every year, only be given for actually achieving peace, or is it enough to be recognized for the courageous attempt to achieve peace, but fall short? Both kinds of contributions to a peaceful world are consistent with the wishes of Alfred Nobel, the man for which the award was originally namedover 100 years ago. Unfortunately, the decision to award the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize to President Juan Manuel Santos of Columbia for a failed peace dealdoes not live up to the true valueandintent of this most prestigious of world prizes. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the peace prize, insisted that the 2016 peace prize be given to President Santos of the troubled country of Colombiain South Americabecause he tried so hard to achieve peace, even though he ultimately failed. He successfully negotiated a peace deal between the government and rebelswho have been fighting for decades. He then asked the country to vote in a referendum to approvethe deal. To the surpriseof many, the people of Columbia voted against the negotiated peace deal. Fighting may re-start, but President Santos hopes to try for peace again. It remains to be seen whether those efforts will succeed.Nonetheless,Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman ofthe Norwegian Nobel Committee observed that since there is so little actual peace in the worldtoday, “we have to award those who are trying.”This is not the first timethe Nobel selection committee has missed the mark. They haveundervalued ourunderstanding of peace beyond what Nobel originally had in mind by honoring, for example, human rights and environmental activists whose actions, however admirable, are not easily linked to “peace” (e.g.Shirin Ebadi in 2003, Lech Walesa in 1983 and Al Gore in 2007).It's even worse when the award is awarded prematurely(too early), as with President Barack Obama in 2009. He was elected in 2008 and hadn’t achievedanything yet. Obama’s Prague speech, given prior to his Nobel Prize, inspired many by sharinghis vision of a world without nuclear weapons. In retrospect, the Nobel Committee was indulging in wishful thinking. Obama, although moderate in many respects, escalated the American militaryinvolvement in Afghanistan just weeks after receiving the award, and worse, never really used the eight years of his presidency to push forward the visionhe outlined in his Prague speech. In fact, some may argue, the world began to get a little more unstable during his presidency. Finally, awarding the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize to President Santos is questionable for other reasons. For one thing, Santos served as Defense Minister under Alvaro Uribe, who had previously orderedSantos to conduct a vicious military campaignagainst the rebels. He was accused by some for going too far. Furthermore, unlike prior Nobel awards for peacemaking efforts (U.S./Vietnam, Israel/Egypt,Israel/P.L.O.), the representative for the rebelsin negotiations, the rebel leader RonrigoLondono, was not a co-winneror even mentioned in the award ceremony.Shouldn’t both sides of a peace deal be rewarded? What emerges from these arguments isthe importance of clarity in who is eligible to win such a prestigious award. This is especially necessary when the actual achievement of peace does not happen, but we celebrate the partial achievements of those who, through good or bad actions, attempted but failed to win the peace this is the article I need the response paper essay between 200-250 words should include paragraph one Sentence 1: APA Citation + reporting verb + main idea of whole article Sentences 2 and 3: short article summary (1 or 2 sentences) Sentence 3 - Student Thesis: 2 focus points + opinion/ position phrases (2 negative responses) then second paragraph Topic sentence: 1st focus point + position/stance Paraphrased sentence of first idea from article that is being responded to Explanation of position/opinion + examples to back up argument Topic sentence: 2 focus point + position/stance Paraphrased sentence of first idea from article that is being responded to Explanation of position/opinion + examples to back up argument no need for conclusion all about the article given up
