What meaning can be given to the doctrine of the image of God in the light of modern thought about the nature of humanity?
Topic: What meaning can be given to the doctrine of the image of God in the light of modern thought about the nature of humanity?
Order Description
Below are comments I've been given on what to include. Would be great to have as much of this as possible.
the success of the essay will depend on being able to clearly define what you understand by the terms “modern thought” and “the nature of humanity” perhaps using specific and limited number of writers. You need to start by describing key ideas about humanity which have characterised in modern thought. By modern thought you need to acknowledge and distinguish between modernity and post-modernity.Then you need to select two theologians to help you explore how their doctrine of God has been developed in the light of the understanding of humanity in modernity and post modernity.
Having defined what you mean in this essay by the term “modern thought about the nature of humanity”….you can then go to describe how two selected theologians like for example Colin Gunton define humanity based on the doctrine of the God the Creator as Trinity. i.e. To be made in the image of God (who is trinity) means to live in relationship (not in isolation) and to see creation as a dynamic work in progress. We are participant co-creators. His doctrine of creation and his doctrine of God need to be held together.
Your argument needs to find points of connection where the doctrines of God (as trinity ) in your two selected authors critically engage with modern ideas about the nature of humanity
