What a democracy is

Explain what a democracy is, how democracies are structured, how democracy differs from other forms of government, what ingredients are essential for building and maintaining a successful democracy, what potential threats exist that might endanger the stability/lifespan of a democracy, how democracies can change over time, and the important role citizens play in a democracy. Summaries focus exclusively on the main ideas that are presented in the class. They should not include many of your opinions. The summary essay should include an introductory paragraph (or 2-3 paragraphs if you wish, depending upon how to start your paper). This paragraph should provide a brief overview of the key ideas that will be presented, along with a thesis statement, or statement of purpose. Summary essays should group similar ideas together, or next to each other, in the paper and these ideas should be linked through smooth transitions. Summary essays are normally written in your own words….they do not cona many quotes. If you [11:08 PM, 6/17/2020] E: have more than about five to seven quotes in this paper you have too many. It is perfectly acceptable to draw from the assigned readings to provide supporting details and to enhance descriptions of concepts covered in class. However, the bulk of your paper should focus upon what we discussed in class. At most, 10-20% of the content of your paper should draw from the assigned/suggested readings. It can be less, but content from these materials should not constitute the bulk of the content within your paper. No outside resources should be used to craft this paper beyond our class reading list.
