"Quote" (page) is an example of ("karma") because ________(Fill in the blank).
The third chapter, "Water," is a sequel to what might arguably be her masterpiece, Tripmaster Monkey. In
that novel, Wittman Ah Sing, the protagonist, fills the narrative with opinionated witticisms about art, culture
and life. That same energy is completely lacking in "Water": Kingston's narrative (the original draft of which
was lost in the fire) is for the most part in the third person here, describing Wittman and Tana's (his wife)
move to Hawaii to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. Here the theme of peace is driven home in
some very emotional scenes--my favorite being Wittman's intervention at a Sanctuary for those who do not
want to serve in the Vietnam War.
There are so many contrasting characters, elements, situations, themes in "Water." Yet, "contrast" does not
do justice to the interdependency of some opposites. Pick a pair and lay out the "yin and yang."
A starting definition: Yin / Yang : Two halves that together complete wholeness. Yin and yang are also the
starting point for change. When something is whole, by definition it is unchanging and complete. So when
you split something into two halves – yin / yang, it upsets the equilibrium of wholeness. This starts both
halves chasing after each other as they seek a new balance with each other.
The word Yin comes out to mean “shady side” and Yang “sunny side”. Yin Yang is the concept of duality
    forming a whole.
Here are some examples from me. Find your own:
"When the peace demonstrations turned violent, and doves and hawks were using the same tacticsrevolutionary and governmental provocateurs infiltration paradise and vigils, Governor Ray Gun ordering
the National Guard and helicopters to tear-gas and shoot up People's Park…" (65). This is an example of
karma because they are supposed to be peace demonstrators and yet they became violent.
    Yin Yang:
"Through the open windows and open doors, Princess and Knight spotted each other- and met!" (91). This
is an example of Yin Yang because even though it was just a bed time story the Knight and Princess
needed each other to make that house a home.
    Aloha:
"She was a tourist in Paradise, full of hope…"(84) This is an example of aloha because she is in paradise
and peaceful unlike her life of the mainland.
