Isabel Wilkerson’s book The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration, is one of the
more enlightening but lesser-known stories of the 20th century. It looks at one of the largest and most
significant movements of people within the borders of the United States ever to occur. Her book focuses on
individual lives, individual stories, and individual struggles in a way that makes a much larger history come
alive. I think it will be one of the most eye-opening books you've ever read.
Your task is to review this book and examine what makes it effective, what makes it so significant, and why it
warrants (or doesn't warrant) all the plaudits it has received.
Of the three main characters whom Wilkerson follows in the book, you are to choose one that, for you
personally, best encapsulates the entire theme or themes of the book. While not neglecting the other main
characters, explain why you chose the one you chose—what you related to, what themes your character best
embodies, and why the book would be incomplete without your character and what he or she represents.
Finally, provide your personal reaction to the book: How are you yourself are responding to it; how it has or
hasn’t increased your understanding of American history
