Before writing the essay, just look at your artwork for a loooooong time and note key features.
-The goals of this assignment is learning how to look carefully and learning how to describe art in detail.
Your essay should:
-include the title of your artwork in italics (i.e. Vincent van Gogh, The Starry Night)
-describe the artwork in so much detail that someone who cannot see the artwork can visualize it.
-not address the historical context in which the artwork was produced and not focus on recounting the stories/narratives in the artwork (if any) -- only
focus on description.
-be about three paragraphs, double-spaced, 12 point font
-use the vocabulary below and from the introduction of your textbook:
MEDIUM- What is the object is made of?
TECHNIQUE- How the object is made.
SIZE/SCALE- How large/small is the object?
COMPOSITION- Arrangement of elements
LINE- Descriptive, outline, decorative, etc.
COLOR- Hue, value (degree of lightness or darkness), intensity (purity of the color)
TEXTURE- Smooth, rough, worn, etc.
SCULPTING METHODS- Additive (clay, metal) vs. Subtractive (stone, wood) sculpting; Relief vs. In the round sculpting
