“Understanding what it takes to succeed at Community College”

The president of this college has selected you to be the commencement speaker at Fall 2021 Convocation for the freshmen class of students. Your address must warn students of the pitfall and ways to overcome hurdles during their time in community college. This student address should be mindful of the college experience which include inside-the-classroom and outside-the-classroom strategies. Your speech is entitled “The Tale of Two Students: Understanding what it takes to succeed at Community College”. In this speech, you are expected to provide facts, storytelling, and advice to new students.! Use real services on campus to identify how students can benefit from the campus community.
• You may choose or NOT choose one of these examples in your story:
o A student who is doing well in school compared to the other who is not
o A friend/family member who graduated from college and doing well compared to another friend/family member who is working and haven’t attended college.
Student A:
• Why is it important for students to be connected to the college? (Use articles provided below)
• What is the profile (behavior, habits, attitude) of a student who is expected to do at the college?
• Provide and explain what students should be doing INSIDE-the-classroom to be successful?
• Provide and explain one outside-the-classroom tool/service that students can use to gain friends/networks on campus. Why this service? What’s the benefit offered to students?
• Identify 2 resources ( e.g. Disability Services, Student clubs, faculty/staff) students can utilize to become connected to the college. Explain how students can use these resources for good?
Student B:
• Why do you think some students are not doing well in college? Identify AND explain 3 (three) reasons for student’s poor performance or why they enter college then stop coming to class/school?
• Explain a scenario(s) in which students fall victim to NOT doing well in school. What advice do you offer them to change that negative situation into a positive one?
Whether it is the conversations that we had in class, the videos from Blackboard , articles below, and/or from your own personal experiences; I encourage you to use information that you gained throughout this course to compose such a meaningful address to help students succeed in college.
