Understanding of the teaching, learning and assessment processes

Develop a better understanding of the teaching, learning and assessment processes as well as teacher effectiveness through observation, reflection, and teaching of a physical education or health education lesson. The field experience activity focuses on best practices in the elementary classroom. This assignment requires the student to observe the two lessons in the videos and then reflect on the observation. The focus for the observation is the effective use of a variety of assessment strategies in the elementary classroom for PE. For example, it focuses on the use of effective and varied communication strategies with students, specialist teachers, and support personnel in physical education and the use of effective teaching strategies for grouping, adapting existing materials and technology, and designing appropriately sequenced learning activities based on the Florida State Standards. This assignment includes the following:

  1. View two videos: https://www.pecentral.org/mediacenter/video_basketballdribblinglesson.html https://www.pecentral.org/mediacenter/video_full_4x4fitness.html
  2. Write a summary for each of the teaching experiences demonstrated in the videos.
  3. Analyze the research literature and textbook material to prepare for a lesson that integrates the concepts and skills of the physical education and health education areas.
  4. Analyze the research literature and textbook material to prepare for a lesson that demonstrate understanding of the structure and function of human movement and motor development.
  5. Analyze the research literature and textbook material to prepare a lesson in physical education and health education that integrates effective motivational strategies for diverse groups of pupils, including ESOL/LEP and students with exceptionalities.
  6. Plan a lesson that integrates physical education and health education instruction into the elementary curriculum. (Use lesson plan from previous assignment)

Field experience is divided into two sections. The first section emphasizes personal observation and data collection skills that are described, analyzed, and evaluated in a reflective journal. The second section of the assignment emphasizes teaching effective methods and strategies with elementary-aged children. It also emphasizes the planning and implementing of a variety of assessment strategies, including teacher made tests, and authentic assessment approaches.

Part ONE: Reflective journal

• Use of direct teaching or media in physical education and health education instruction.
• Various teacher roles, school organizational patterns and philosophical variants in the school system’s physical education and health education programs.
• Organization and management of varied learning groups in teaching physical education and health education to address elementary (K-6) student needs and interests.
• Use of systematic feedback and coaching to promote learning in the areas of physical education and health education; and Content and skills taught in physical education and health education and their correlation with the Florida State Standards.

Writing in the reflective journal please use specific DETAILS to compare and contrast the strategies employed by the two teachers observed. To what degree did they utilize these strategies, if at all?
How effective were the strategies used with English language learning (ELL) students or students with other special needs?
Were these students evident in the videos? How effective were the strategies used with students of different ability levels?
