Use the following scenario to guide you in the development of the information sheet about assessment for parents/carers.
You are a Year 3 teacher at Macquarie University Primary School - a large inner-city K-6 school with a population of 1600 students. There are 8 classes in year 3, you have 30 children in your class (18 boys and 12 girls) with a diverse range of abilities. Your class is also culturally and linguistically diverse with over 15 different language groups. You have 2 girls and 1 boy with an Indigenous background. There a child in your class with moderate hearing loss that requires you to wear a microphone all of the time. You also have two children that require learning support in your class and you receive four hours of SLSO time each day. The school has received a grant to increase the use of technology in the classroom – you have an interactive smart board with access to the internet in your room.
The Assistant Principal has asked you to prepare an information sheet for parents which outlines the value of and purpose for assessment. Include a definition and example of the following forms of assessment:
- Informal
- Formal
- Diagnostic
- Formative
- Summative
Explain when and how feedback is provided to children and parent/care givers and the process of moderation of assessment.
• Part A: Construct an information sheet for parents that outlines the value and purpose for assessment (two pages maximum).
• Part B: Write an exegesis about the information sheet (1 page maximum), the reference list is not counted and can make up the second page.
