Write an academic essay (700 words maximum, including any quotes) to show what you understand about the place of children’s literature in the early years of schooling (Foundation to Year 3). Structure your essay so you are addressing the content of children’s literature in relation to (a) literacy as a social practice, (b) children’s emergent literacy practices and (c) catering for children’s diverse learning needs in a school classroom (Foundation to Year 3). An academic essay involves you taking a particular position on a topic, and justifying that position using the set readings.

Structure your essay into 4 paragraphs as follows:
A. a brief introduction that tells the reader what the essay will be about (100 words)
B. a paragraph on the relationship of children’s literature and literacy as a social practice (Chapter 3) (200 words)
C. a paragraph on the place of children’s literature for developing children’s emergent literacy practices (Chapter 2) (200 words), and
D. a paragraph on using children’s literature to cater for children’s diverse learning needs in the school classroom (Chapter 4) (200 words).

You will need to reference each of the three set chapters once in the appropriate place. Make up an APA reference list to show that you know how to reference chapters in an edited collection.
