In the film Trobriand Cricket, we see the adaptation of an internationally played sport to local Trobriand culture. Changes that the Trobriand islanders made to the sport include the use of face paintings and war dress; changes to (and decoration of) the bats; a different way of throwing the ball; the use of various kinds of magic; and the incorporation of chants and different kinds of dances (entrance and exit dances). Other than the changes listed above, name two of the most important ways in which the game of cricket was changed according to the logic of Trobriand culture that significantly differ from how sports are played in the West. At the end of the cricket game in Trobriand Cricket they hold a ritual called Kayasa – in fact,
the Trobriand islanders interviewed in the film say that Kayasa is the whole point of their kind of
cricket. Using concepts that we learned in the unit on culture and the economy (in Week 8),
explain what the Kayasa is an example of, or most closely resembles in the realm of the
economy.
