Transport Infrastructure Engineering

TransInfra Ventures have retained you as the lead consultant to advise on traffic and
transportation issues relating to proposals for their new residential estate development in
England. Specifically, you are required to:
1) Provide pavement design advice for a new highway to accomodate the anticipated traffic
generated as result of the residential development development based on two proposed
design options
2) Assess the traffic impact of the proposal on the area, including an evaluation of the
capacity of the existing priority T-junction to accommodate the generated traffic from the
new development
3) Assess the pedestrian safety of the existing community near the proposed development
and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
Relevant portions of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) should be
consulted. Further additional information and requirements for the new development that
could assist you in your assessment are the following:

  1. Pavement Design (LOs 1, 3, 4, 6) (30%)
Using the traffic data in Table Q1.1, check the adequacy of the two proposed pavement
    designs (Figure Q1.1) including:
    a. Design traffic in msa required (5%)
    b. The foundation class of each design (5%)
    c. Structural capacity of each design (10%)
    d. Embedded energy and preferred option (10%)
For the pavement foundation assume design subgrade CBR = 15% percentile value.
HBM materials are to be cement-bound materials only (Category A). Assume a
pavement design life of 40 years
