numbers are and what you think they mean. To start this problem, you know the

original scale is 1:24,000 and the scale of the map as published is 1:31,700 (from (4) above). This means that more of the U.S.G.S. map was squeezed onto a page than was originally possible. Thus, the map in Fig. 6.15 was shrunk by some amount.
