Tomato leafminer (Phthorimaea absoluta)

  1. Describe the biology, ecological niche and ecophysiology of the species. This is a description of the organism itself, including taxonomic classification, the environment in which the species is found (ecological niche) and how the environment, both physical and biological, interacts with the physiology of the species (ecophysiology). Ecophysiology may include factors such as climate tolerances, size/behaviour of the organism, nutritional requirements/feeding characteristics, reproductive rate and other environmental factors such as salinity, water or oxygen availability.
  2. Describe the native and current invasive distribution of the species, and their recorded pathways of dispersal from their native to invasive ranges. Your answer must include a written description and a map showing the native range and the global invasive range of your chosen species. It is expected that the description of the pathways of dispersal are given in detail and include dates of dispersal/invasion where possible. It is suggested that you use different colours on the same map to depict the native and invasive ranges.
  3. Describe the impacts of your invasive species. This should focus on the impacts, e.g. physical, economic, and social, in the invasive range, however, the species may also have negative impacts in its native range.
  4. Evaluate and justify whether you think this species has the ability to establish and impact the New Zealand environment. Your answer should refer (but not exclusive) to factors such as invasive species characteristics, climate envelope, suitable environment, freedom from competition and likelihood of transport to New Zealand.
