The theoretical model that I chose to apply my research project is Madeleine Leininger’s trans-cultural nursing theory. While childhood obesity has many determinants, I believe, its root partially either originates from or is exacerbated by the values, beliefs, traditions and cultural norms of the individual, family, group, community or the greater society. More importantly, this theory further expands the cultural dimension beyond multiculturalism and into the diversity of class and gender and the inequalities that it creates which have huge implications for obesity and the broader nursing profession. Therefore, one needs to truly understand the individual’s belief system and cultural values that guide them in order to influence the expected behavior change that promotes a lasting health and wellness both in school and in the community.
