The theme of memory

Explain how people remember historical events years, or even
decades, after they occur. As you have noticed, most of the novel The Assault takes place after World War
Two, yet the war is never far away. In a three-paragraph essay, discuss how 1) Anton, 2) Cor Takes, and 3)
Anton’s father-in-law De Graaff all relate differently to the events of World War Two that personally affected
them. Discuss not only how each individual has remembered and processed those events, but also explain
why those memories differ so markedly among the three of them. Try to think beyond the fact that each of the
three actually experienced different things during the war based on a book called assault.
