The Tempest by William Shakespeare
Order Description
Subject: The Tempest, by William Shakespeare
The primary goal of this paper is to discuss the concept of ?civilized? vs. ?uncivilized? in The
Tempest by using characters to illustrate each extreme. *You must present one (or two characters at
most) as the ?most civilized? and one (or two characters at most) as the ?least civilized.? Of
course, you must provide support for your thesis, so you must cite from the play and the three
articles have read (see below).
We have discussed that there are varying ideas of what makes a person ?civilized.? Everyone has
their own personal conventions or rules for civilization, and so does each society or culture. We
have been exploring ideas of what makes one ?civilized? from first Twain (?The Damned Human Race?),
then from Shakespeare?s The Tempest, and I then gave you two secondary sources on The Tempest, one
by Ronald Takaki (?The ?Tempest? in the Wilderness: The Racialization of Savagery? ), and the other
by Matthew DeCoursey (?The Logic of Inequality: Caliban?s baseness in The Tempest?).
Begin this writing process by being sure to clearly state your definitions on what it means to be
?civilized? and ?uncivilized,? and, in addition to referencing (and citing, of course!) The Tempest
itself, use Twain, Takaki and DeCoursey as further support (Please use at least two of the three,
and use the ones I have provided for you on Blackboard). It is my expectation that you will not use
any other outside sources other than those three that I gave you. BE SURE TO CITE THEM USING MLA
FORMAT, both in-text, and on a works cited page. OTHERWISE, AS YOU KNOW, IT IS PLAGIARISM, AND YOU
WILL FAIL THE PAPER.
As you examine the topic, some questions to consider:
What does it really mean to be ?CIVILIZED?? What do we require in order to be civilized? What do we
give up? In this play, who is a ?savage??or the least ?civilized?? Why/How so? Although all of the
characters are flawed in some way, who stands out as the best? And who is the worst? Why? How so?
**You must be clear in stating your own definitions of civilized vs. uncivilized. Be sure to
provide each defintion immediately followed by exemplification from the text. First do one side,
then the other. Consider according to Twain?s terminology in ?The Damned Human Race,? who sinks to
the bottom as the worst (in The Tempest)? Is there a difference between who is treated as ?savage?
and who is truly ?savage?? How is the term ?natural? different or similar to the term ?savage? or
?uncivilized?? Also consider in your discussion how power is used over others so that the
characters get what they want. When is it used appropriately? Inappropriately? Absurdly? Or is
power ever appropriate over others?
Set up for this particular paper:?
Begin with a formal outline with specific references. The outline should be about half the length
of the finished paper. Read and use the back of the outline format page for the checklist as well.
Be sure to re-read the entire assignment so you are definitely aware of what needs to be in the
paper.
You should have the following:
1. an introduction, then
2. your first body paragraph should be your definition of what it means to be a civilized character
(with at least three main components), then
3. as many body paragraphs (assuming at least one for each of the components you've listed in your
definition) as it takes to discuss each of your points. One main point per paragraph. With SPECIFIC
references for each. They must be cited, in-text as well as your handing in an MLA format Works
Cited page with at least 2 of the the 3 references (Takaki's article, DeCoursey?s article, and "The
Damned Human Race" all listed on Works Cited page --according to 8th edition MLA guidelines--, and
cited within the body of your paper). Of Course, you will also cite from your primary source, The
Tempest.
4. From there, you begin again with another body paragraph of your definition of what it means to
be an uncivilized character, and repeat the process. Paper length is 5-7 pages, and should be about
1/2 and 1/2 Civilized vs Uncivilized.
MLA citation information:
The bibliography information from each of your sources must appear with your paper on a final page
marked ?WORKS CITED.? THIS MUST BE DONE IN FORMAL, PRECISE, updated to reflect the new 2016/8th
edition MLA FORMAT. YOU MAY LOOK UP THE FORMAT FOR YOUR PARTICULAR TYPE OF TEXT ON THE MLA HANDBOOK
WEBSITE or I also recommend Purdue Owl.
YOU MUST be sure to include on your works cited page, the following information: your bibliography
information from YOUR copy of The Tempest, IN CORRECT MLA FORMAT and the other sources I have given
you. Only cite the ones you use.
ALSO CITE from your copy of the play all your references in-textually using Act, scene and line
numbers [for example, for Act one, scene two, lines 200-205, you will write, (I.ii.200-205) Notice
how the act number is capital Roman numerals, the scene number is in lower case Roman numerals, and
the line numbers are Arabic, and they have periods in between them].
