The Tale of the Heike is the quintessential Japanese War Tale. Although it is semi-fictional, it still sheds light on, and informs us about, an important turning point in Japanese history. It also reveals a great deal about the military, or should I say, the ideal military practices of the time. Treat The Tale of the Heike as a primary source to examine and to discuss FIVE different military practices that warriors engaged in during the Gempei War. That is, I want you to examine the early Bushi (warrior) code of combat conduct. What did it entail? What did warriors consider to be valorous conduct? How did warriors conduct themselves?
