The role of medication as being either “lifesaving” or “life-changing death”

Discuss the role of medication as being either “lifesaving” or “life changing-death” with regards to reducing errors during the pharmacotherapy process within the
pre-hospital setting.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Identify methods to reduce errors in the management and administration of medication
  • Understand all the drugs administered by the emergency care practitioner at the relevant scope of practice
  • Explain the principles of drug dose calculations and its administration.
    BACKGROUND:
“Across healthcare, organizations are increasingly focused on improving patient safety. Yet in the
prehospital setting, there is a paucity of information about the safety of care, in spite of the well-known and
documented idiosyncrasies. One component of prehospital care that is particularly understudied, yet highly
influential to patient safety is medication administration.”
