The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF)

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has determined core competencies that apply to all nurse practitioners, regardless of specialty or patient population focus. NONPF has represented them within nine broad areas of core competence. NONPF created the first set of Nurse Practitioner Competencies in 1990; the most recent updates were incorporated in 2017. This synthesis course has had the overarching objective of preparing you to be able to synthesize knowledge gained throughout the program and be prepared to apply each of the nine core competencies within your selected areas of practice and your representative communities.

The nine broad areas of competency are:

Quality

The program has prepared me to meet the quality competency by teaching me how to measure and improve the quality of care. I have learned about quality improvement methods, such as root cause analysis and continuous quality improvement. This knowledge will allow me to ensure that my patients receive high-quality care.

Practice Inquiry

The program has prepared me to meet the practice inquiry competency by teaching me how to conduct research and evaluate evidence. I have learned how to develop research questions, collect data, and analyze results. This knowledge will allow me to keep up with the latest research and to make informed decisions about patient care.

Technology and Information Literacy

The program has prepared me to meet the technology and information literacy competency by teaching me how to use technology to access and manage information. I have learned how to use electronic health records, clinical decision support systems, and other health information technologies. This knowledge will allow me to provide efficient and effective care to my patients.

Policy

The program has prepared me to meet the policy competency by teaching me how to understand and influence health policy. I have learned about the different levels of government, the legislative process, and the role of nurses in policy development. This knowledge will allow me to advocate for policies that improve the health of my patients and my community.

Health Delivery System

The program has prepared me to meet the health delivery system competency by teaching me about the different types of health care settings and the role of nurses in each setting. I have learned about the challenges and opportunities of each setting, and I have developed skills that will allow me to be successful in any setting.

Ethics

The program has prepared me to meet the ethics competency by teaching me about the ethical principles that guide nursing practice. I have learned about the importance of patient autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. This knowledge will allow me to make ethical decisions in my practice.

Independent Practice

The program has prepared me to meet the independent practice competency by teaching me how to think critically and solve problems independently. I have learned how to assess patients, develop treatment plans, and manage care. This knowledge will allow me to provide high-quality care to my patients, even when I am working independently.

In addition to these nine competencies, the program has also prepared me to be a lifelong learner. I have learned how to access and evaluate information, and I am committed to staying up-to-date on the latest research and evidence. This will allow me to provide the best possible care to my patients, now and in the future.

I plan to engage in social change in my community by working to improve access to health care, especially for underserved populations. I will do this by working with community organizations, advocating for policy changes, and providing direct care to patients in need.

Specifically, I plan to:

  • Work with community health centers to expand their services and reach more patients.
  • Advocate for policies that make health insurance more affordable and accessible.
  • Provide direct care to patients in underserved communities.

I believe that social change is essential to improving the health of our communities. I am committed to using my skills and knowledge as a nurse practitioner to make a difference in the world.
