• Problem: In 2022, the MLB’s league batting average is .233 which is the lowest in history.
• Causes: MLB has implemented a deadened baseball, the use of humidors in every major league stadium, and expanded pitching staffs to mitigate a 99-day lockout which all conspired to send batting average to its lowest level (.233) in history.
• Solution: In my speech, I would like to propose that the MLB count bunts, fielder choices and sacrifice flies as hits in order to increase the league’s batting average. This hit can be counted as an “unearned hit,” similar to an unearned run. MLB would gain more viewers as people are more likely to watch a sport with more successful athletes.
