The incidence, distribution, and control of emerging healthcare concerns in global populations.

Analyze the incidence, distribution, and control of emerging healthcare concerns in global populations.

Scenario
You are preparing to speak at a global health conference about a disease affecting a global population. You plan to present the incidence and prevalence of the disease within the population and discuss efforts to control, eliminate, and eradicate the disease.

Instructions
Select a disease impacting a population outside of the United States. Create a PowerPoint presentation that addresses the following:

• Explain the disease (1 slide)
• Describe the population affected by the disease, including demographics (1 slide)
• Present the incidence and prevalence of the disease within the population (1 slide)
• Use the notes section of this slide to explain the difference, in your own words, between incidence and prevalence.
• Discuss efforts to control, eliminate, and eradicate the disease (1 slide)
• Use the notes section of this slide to analyze the effectiveness of these efforts.

Analyzing the incidence, distribution, and control of global diseases requires looking at the most current epidemiological data. For this scenario, we will focus on Malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa, a region that carries 95% of the global burden of the disease.

Slide 1: Understanding Malaria

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

Biological Agent: Plasmodium falciparum is the most prevalent and deadliest species in Africa.

Transmission Cycle: Mosquitoes ingest parasites from an infected human, the parasites mature in the mosquito, and are then injected into a new host.

Symptoms: Fever, headache, and chills appear 10–15 days after infection. If not treated within 24 hours, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death, particularly through respiratory distress or cerebral malaria.
