Read the attached article: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/25/us/politics/fed… The attorney general repeats an argument made countless times in the history of criminal justice policy, that the death penalty will deter crime. Assess the validity of this claim by applying an analysis of both classical and contemporary deterrence theories of crime causation. Summarize both classical and modern deterrence arguments. In your summary, be sure to assess each argument as strong, satisfactory or weak based on your application of Akers’ criteria for evaluating theory. Finally, conclude whether the resumption of federal executions is likely to deter crimes.

Students may refer to outside research, including the academic research, government or trusted public data sources (UCR, BJS, DPIC, etc.), or broadcast news accounts reputable and well-known news outlets (e.g. ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Buffalo News, AP, Huff Post, etc.).

The essays must follow a recognized manual of style for writing, formatting, and referencing sources. Assignments should be approximately 500 words in length.Students will be evaluated on the degree to which they:

address all elements of the assignment
correctly apply and integrate course material
logically connect conclusions to the materials presented
write an engaging and grammatically correct essay
