Robert Harris' The Ghost presents a narrator who is caught inside a mystery of which he is unaware. He finds
himself as a ghost writer to ex-Prime Minister Adam Lang, a very well-paying job for a writer. The ghost writer
remains nameless throughout the novel, a ghost that represents a man who he has replaced, McAra, who
suddenly and mysteriously dies (is it an accident, suicide or murder?). McAra was writing the biography of
Lang who finds himself in political trouble. The end of the novel presents the perhaps vague disappearance of
the ghost (narrator) who gave his study of Lang to his girlfriend to be published in the event of his death.
Write a 3-4 page paper that examines the character of the ghost writer - what kind of fa person is? Is he too
curious for his own good? Does his honesty as a writer cause him to follow the facts rather than write a false
narrative? Why does he get involved in the details of McAra's death? Why is the mystery he uncovers so
important that it must remain a political secret?
