Order Description
Students will read The Buffalo Creek Disaster and write a reflection
incorporating a discussion of ethics. The purpose of this assignment is for
students to think critically about ethics and law. This assignment is also
designed to help improve undergraduate student writing outcomes.
Students are expected to have a minimum word count of 1000 words (2 single
spaced pages). Please stay between 1,000-1,200 words. The professor will
stop reading at 1,500 words (approximately 3 pages). Do not submit more
than 3 pages.
Directions:
1. Format: 2 pages, single spaced, double spaced between paragraphs.
2. Organization: introductory paragraph, multiply paragraphs in the body
with transitional sentences, and a concluding paragraph. You must elaborate
on the questions and instructions given below.
3. Topic: Write a reflection on The Buffalo Creek Disaster incorporating a
discussion on ethics. Create your own unique title for the paper which should
be tailored to your content.
a. Devote at least one third of your essay to a discussion of ethics and
corporate social responsibility as a part of ethics, drawing upon what you read
in The Buffalo Creek Disaster. Include at least a brief discussion on
sustainability.
b. You may choose other topics from the book for the remaining two thirds of
your essay. What is most significant to you? Why?
c. In the alternative, you may choose to write your entire essay about Ethics,
CSR, and Sustainability in the context of The Buffalo Creek Disaster.
d. Be selective. You cannot talk about everything in two pages. I recommend
that you discuss no more than three significant facets of the book with one of
them being Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility.

e. How will you apply what you have learned from this book in your personal
life, career, or both? Explain.
4. Include and integrate the definitions and requirements listed below within
your paper. Do not simply list them in your introduction.
a. Define ethics.
b. Define corporate social responsibility.
c. Define sustainability using the United Nations definition.
d. Provide an example of a situation that you have face or might face to
illustrate how sustainability can be pursued using each leg of the Triple
Bottom Line (TBL).
5. Writing Mechanics: your paper will be evaluated on grammar, proper
voice, transitions, citations, flow, and organization. See rubric for additional
detail.
6. Format:
b. Create your own Engaging Title. Do not copy the words describing this
assignment. Think creatively.
c. Single space paragraphs, double space between paragraphs.
d. Use Times New Roman or Cambria 12 point font with one inch margins on
each side and one inch margins top and bottom of page.
e. Number your pages at the bottom in the center.
f. Points will be subtracting for failure to follow formatting instructions.
g. Appropriately cite all content that is not yours using a recognized citation
method such as MLA, APA, Chicago Style, etc.
