Description
Let's flesh out the setting a bit more, this time by taking into account the priority of stressing some essential idea or principle that should become a feature of the gameplay. As we've discussed in class, this will serve as part of your game's central narrative, something for the players to perceive and engage with, or resist.
Fill out the following details for your game's setting. For each specification, write a few sentences of explanation, and don't just give one- or two-word answers:
The name of your game's world. If it's "Earth," that's fine, but remember that in order to adhere to the expectations of the fantasy and/or sci-fi genres, this can't be exactly the same Earth we're living in right now. Also: don't be lazy. "Earth" refers to Earth, as in the planet you're presently stuck to. If your world is substantively different, then give it a different name.
The approximate temporal setting. This refers to the level of technology or kinds of things one might expect to see. Use common sense. If this is a fantasy world, with warriors in armor and mystical creatures, then reference something in the Middle Ages or Medieval period. Coupling this with a geographical reference is a good idea, too: 13th c. Europe, or 6th c. Persia, or 8th c. China, or whatever. If yours is a sci-fi experience, then fine: 29th c. Ümerika or something similar. If your world is based on another planet, that's fine, too. Just give an approximate comparison. The point is to give a frame of reference so that a player will know what to expect. Finally, if your world is so different that to compare it to any time or place imaginable is pointless, then you're probably either off-track or attempting something that won't work overall. You should talk to me before you work too much and I end up erasing your world, Thanos-style.
A description of the world, adapted and revised from your first draft of the discussion. But don't just repeat everything. Describe the world as though to a person who is hearing about it for the first time. You want to impress them -- what should they know? What's dangerous? What's beautiful? What's daily life like? 500 words minimum here.
Finally, what do you want to say with this setting? How is this setting going to be used to send a message or make a certain kind of reception come across? Be explicit about that reception here and discuss how the setting will enable the kind of game-play (story-telling) that makes that reception happen. 250 words minimum.
