Stop and frisk

Focus specifically on stop and frisk policy in New York City and
start to look at our semester policy project dataset. You will need access to Excel to open the file. You have
free access a student through Microsoft Office 365.
Make sure you open your dataset and watch the tutorial located in the module at the top of the class page. We
are going to work through some of the answers, and I want you to start sharing your initial thoughts about the
data. Be sure to do all of the following:
Please post AT LEAST 3 responses to classmates for a total of four posts. Posts made at the very end of the
week will also lose points, so be involved in the discussion boards early and often! All posts should be a
minimum of 250 words, with points lost for being short of this minimum.

  1. New York City (pre-coronavirus) had approximately 8 million residents, 50+ million visitors a year and
several hundred thousand people a day commuting to and from jobs. In that context, do the total number of
stops and frisks conducted each year seem reasonable? Be sure to cite some data to support your conclusion.
  2. Looking at the totals from the ENTIRE CITY section of your data, what statistic (total or difference) stands
out to you if you were asked to determine whether stop and frisk in NYC was effective in reducing crime? Cite
    the statistic.
  3. Looking at the totals from the ENTIRE CITY section of your data, what statistic (total or difference) stands
out to you if you were asked to determine whether stop and frisk in NYC was NOT effective in reducing crime?
    Cite the statistic.
  4. The last two sections on the third page of your Word file looks at the changes in stops and frisks between
2006 and 2012 in two specific areas of the city: intersections with at least 10 or more stops per week in 2006
(over 500 total stops at one intersection) and those intersections that did not have stops either year (this
compares high dosage treatment areas with no dosage areas). What does the data tell you about the
    effectiveness of stop and frisk?
