Stem Family Projected

STEM may be a newer concept for some families because their understanding of school is often related to their school experiences. In working to build the home-school connection, early childhood educators must continue to provide families with insight into the curriculum and expectations for learning.

Select one grade level K-3. Identify a science standard, math standard, and technology standard that has not been used in other topics. Create an engaging, at-home project for families to utilize STEM. The project should be an activity that families can easily implement at home.

Create a 1–2-page digital flyer for families that includes the following:

A family-friendly description of STEM.

Introduction to the project that includes a family-friendly explanation of the science, math, and technology standards being used.

Science: We will learn about different types of birds and what they eat. We’ll also observe how birds use their beaks to eat.
  • Science Standard: K-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
  1. studylib.net
studylib.net   Math: We will measure materials, count the number of birds that visit, and explore different shapes.
  • Math Standard: K.G.B.4: Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts, and whole.
Technology: We will use technology to research different types of birds and find inspiration for our bird feeder design.
  • Technology Standard: K.CT.A.1: Explore and recognize different ways that digital tools can be used to communicate with others.
Let’s Build! Materials:
  • Recycled materials (milk cartons, paper cups, plastic bottles)
  • Birdseed
  • String or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Natural materials (pinecones, sticks, leaves)
Steps:
  1. Brainstorm: Talk about different types of bird feeders you’ve seen. What shapes and materials might work best?
  2. Design: Draw or sketch your bird feeder. Think about where you will hang it.
  3. Build: Use your materials to create your bird feeder. Make sure it is sturdy and can hold birdseed.
  4. Test: Hang your bird feeder and observe the birds that visit. What do you notice?
Tips:
  • Make it fun! Let your child take the lead in the design process.
  • Encourage creativity. There is no right or wrong way to build a bird feeder.
  • Spend time observing the birds together. Talk about what you see.
