Dear,
Being an integral part of employees` team at Sony, I feel concerned about a couple of issues, which our company faces today. Sony Corporation is actively engaged in the international development, manufacture, design, and sales of electronics, which is marketed on the global level. Thus, I believe this letter will be informative enough, as I tend to provide with the necessary solutions that you, as a manager, might find useful to implement in future.
Therefore, one of the major problems that caused Sony`s decline is its lack of innovation. Innovation growth defines the brand character for Sony. In past, our company managed to gain the international prominence due to its ability to understand the hidden consumer demand and create innovative electronics, according to the consumers` needs. I think that Sony fails to follow the contemporary product line. After Apple iPad had been introduced into the market, Sony`s brand status faced huge challenges related to the product innovation. Consequently, I think that Sony has to work more on the aspects of the consumer-orientation and innovations. In this case, I would recommend to closely analyze the world of consumer electronics and market segmentation. In short, today it is divided into entertaining gadgets, personal computing segment, cellular phone communications, and cable top boxes, wired TVs. Many of today`s experts believe that future of electronics is connected to the integration of television and personal computer. Thus, I believe that Sony`s aim is to create a necessary network environment, which could contribute to the unusual and specific consumer needs.
Besides, there is another key problem that defines Sony`s fall from the leading position, which is the lack of core competence. In my opinion, Sony has long ignored the fast progress of core businesses that have quickly gained the competitive advantage on the market. In particular, Sony failed to capture the modern music digital market, and, therefore, lost it to Apple iPod. This is the case when lack of constant improvement has caused lack of core advantages for the company. I would recommend Sony to reconsider its production basis. It means that the company needs the total upgrade in its production technology, style, functioning, and application for the consumers in everyday lives. What is more, it would be better if Sony developed its own strategic implementation of the new gadgets, which might have its own unique feature and developed brand name. In this case, good advertising campaign might also be helpful.
The third challenge faced by Sony is unrelated and excessive product diversification. It is evident that this strategy is unsuccessful, as it extensively spends brand resources and shifts the brand focus from its core. Today, Sony cannot control its multiple businesses, which include movies, games, music online store, labels, consumer electronics, financial services and so forth. This is the key reason why Sony is not able to conduct proper branding and product positioning, as it lacks brand focus. In this case, it is important to explore the alternatives for Sony business and production in order to specify its brand orientation. In other words, Sony has to conduct a potential plan for eliminating its diversification and choosing a different perspective. I think that regulation of business portfolio can be achieved through the organizational restructure, subsidies operation, and enhancing operational efficiency.
In conclusion, it is evident that the competition on the consumer electronic market has become extremely tough. Therefore, Sony faces a range of challenges, which have to be regulated in order to gain past leading status. In particular, Sony needs to restructure its business, namely via eliminating product diversification, increasing core competence, and use new approaches to stay consumer-oriented.
