Social Work interpersonal Practice
Social Work interpersonal Practice - developing a working plan with a schizophrenic person.
You work for a secular not for profit agency in a service that helps people with a mental illness. It provides basic housing with case work support. You can provide approximately 3 hours a week to each client for a period of three months. After that you can only provide monthly sessions of approximately 2 hours.
Wayne is a 49 years old single male. He has suffered from schizophrenia since late adolescence. He has recently been in prison for an accumulation of minor offences that probably relate to his last psychotic episode. He is currently on medication and is calm and his thinking is ordered. He has asked to go on the program because he says he cannot go on like this – living on the streets or in a hostel, being involved with petty theft and drug use, not eating well and ending up in trouble. He wants to establish a home and get his life back on track.
Part 1: How do you prepare yourself to meet Wayne?
Prompts: Are you aware of the impact of schizophrenia? Are you aware of the treatment for schizophrenia? What do you think the typical life trajectory of someone like Wayne is?
Part 2: Develop a matrix with him so that he can begin to ‘design’ his life.
• What domains would be appropriate and why?
• Take one domain as an example and describe an appropriate continuum.
• Is there any work with Wayne that may involve other agencies or jurisdictions?
• How can you ensure the work you do together is captured and becomes the basis for his ongoing development?
