Editorial Concept:
Cancel Culture Isn’t The Answer is a 2020 book written by Mary Aiken and co-authored by Maria Bakardjieva regarding the cause and effect of cancel culture in combination with a series of case studies of online platforms, such as YouTube and Twitter, within the context of both Canada and the US. This book is a crossover title which is facing both academic readers and the general public. Aiken does a great job of combining psychological theories with the current online environment, and provides the readers with an exciting perspective to look at cancel culture.
This book answers questions, including -- How is human behaviour represented in cancel culture? What are the causes of cancel culture? What are the effects of cancel culture? By incorporating the idea of “The Online Disinhibition Effect” by Dr. John Suler, this book explores the many reasons why cancel culture has taken place in our society from a psychological perspective. It answers questions such as why people respond more frequently and behave more intensively online as well as the use of social media as a tool to amplify their personalities. This book will lead readers into reflecting on their own behaviours and responses online.
Cancel Culture Isn’t The Answer includes several interviews demonstrating how cancel culture effects the lives of real people behind the screen. Most cases included in this publication are taken directly from online social media platforms, such as YouTube and Twitter, and are conducted by Barkardjieva. The interviews will provide the reader with direct knowledge of the victims’ experience with cancel culture as well as the current state of cancel culture within Canada and the US.
