As America moves into an uncertain future many new challenges and dilemmas may arise. The manner in which the government balances the constitutional rights afforded in a democratic society and the compelling need of national security will define us as a nation. One of the areas that will test this balancing act in the future is America's strategy to combat terrorists' and terrorist organizations' use of social media. In February of 2016, Apple@ refused to cooperate with a court order to assist the FBI in unlocking an Apple iPhone@ used by one of the San Bernardino terrorists (Sandoval, 2016) The debate continues regarding whether or not communications and social media companies have an ethical and public responsibility as well as a legal obligation to do more in combating terrorism in America.
Present a well-reasoned and supported position regarding what sort of strategy government policymakers should create to address the balancing dilemma (i.e., constitutional rights versus national security) regarding terrorists' and terrorist organizations' use of communication networks and social media.
