Sikov Sound Blog

Look at one of the clips from The Black Swan that you reviewed for Chapter 4 (Editing). This time, analyze it in terms of the types of sound involved in the clip. Use the categories described in the chapter.

Follow Sikov's guidelines for analyzing sound: first watch the clip without sound, to get an idea of what each of the shots consists of visually. Then watch it with the sound, to observe how sound clarifies the meaning of the shot. Then listen to just the sound (turning your head away from the screen) so that you can note the different kinds of sound and how they are layered. Remember that although a cut interrupts one shot and replaces it with a new shot, sound works independently of shots and may stretch across several shots. And sounds may be layered on top of each other, with one taking precedence over the other at different points.

Post your analysis and respond to another student's analysis.
