Sexual Motivation and Sex Culture:
In chapter 7, we have discussed various topics related to Motivation and Behavior. For this assignment, we will
focus on sexual motivation and sex culture through the lens of an episode from the Netflix series Black Mirror
titled “Striking Vipers”. An episode about a relationship between two cisgender heterosexual African American
male friends that evolves over time and becomes somewhat complicated. What I want you to do as you watch
the film is write a no less than a one and a half to two page reaction essay that responds to the following
questions about the sexual motivation of Karl and Danny – the protagonists – and the sex culture(s) that shape
their behavior:
Describe how the ‘real life’ sex cultures that Danny and Karl live in shape each their respective sexual
motivations day to day? How does the episode compare and contrast the sex culture of 'married' vs. 'single'
life?
Explain how the respective ‘real life’ sex cultures that Danny and Karl live in have characteristics of both
traditional and non-traditional culture (i.e. you can refer to table 7.2 in the textbook for help on this one)
Describe how the sex culture that Danny and Karl experience in the virtual world (i.e. the video game) has both
traditional and non-traditional cultural characteristics
Explain how the sexual culture present in the video game influences Danny and Karl’s sexual motivation?
This episode also appears to make some points about sexual culture, sexual motivation, and racial and ethnic
identity. What do you think is the significance, if any, of the narrative choice of two cisgender heterosexual?
