As Interior Designers, our role is often to be the curators of our client’s lives. To do
this successfully we need to develop a strong sense of empathy and be able to ‘walk
in another’s shoes’. To investigate this theory, students are to interview an influential
elder in their life - grandparent, parent, aunt/uncle, mentor, older friend – about an
interior space that is important to them. Using the following questions as a guide
analyse the sense of place and concept of home through images, drawings and
annotations in a verbal and visual presentation.
What is the physical structure of the space?
What is the overall feeling of the space to the observer?
What memories does the space evoke for the interviewee?
What emotions does the space bring up for the interviewee?
How do the physical finishes, furniture, orientation, light, accessories add to
that sense of place?
