Self and society

Define Stigma. List, describe, and provide a brief example for each of the three TYPES of stigma that a person can have according to Erving Goffman.

Read The New York Times Article “Mugged by a Mugshot” and answer these questions:

Which of the three types of stigma is produced by mugshot websites? Is the stigma discredited or discreditable?
Why do some people argue that mugshot websites should exist? What is the argument against them? Do you think differently about the sex offender registry?
Do you support or oppose mugshot websites? Do you think differently about the sex offender registry? Do you believe that some people deserve to be stigmatized? If so, who? If not, why not?

Formatting Guidelines: The response papers should be between 3 and 5 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font with one-inch margins. Failure to follow these formatting rules will result in point deductions.

Important Note: You do not need a reference list or in text citations for course material (Powerpoints, videos, and assigned readings). Your papers are graded with the understanding that you are using this material to answer the questions. However, if you use any outside sources (such as a website, a blog post, or a news article not assigned by me), then you must provide the citation in text and include a reference list using ASA style.
