First, check out the link to Livingston's verbal commentary.

Your can also read Kiesel and Murphy as further examples of persuasive writng.
Writing a Commentary - Choosing a topic
When choosing a topic for the commentary, you can consider the topics we've covered in readings and
videos (Dailey and Ellin, Livingston – attitudes toward weight; Brady and Barry - gender), and sample
commentaries from the textbook and ulearn readings. You do not have to limit yourselves to these topics,
however. You may write about any topic you hold a strong opinion about. And, if you want to inject humor
and use satire as Brady and Berry have done, you are welcome to do so (It is not required, but simply an
option).
For this week, you’ll be asked to choose a topic and come up with a thesis statement for your paper.
Remember, the commentary is persuasive and focuses on your opinion. This should be clear from the
thesis statement.
Next, consider how you will use rhetorical appeals (ethical, emotional, logical) in your paper. Which kind of
appeal will you rely most heavily on and why? Provide a basic outline about the specific arguments your
essay will make. Organize your outline by type of rhetorical appeal (ethos, pathos, logos)
