How the Policy Could Be Improved:

The Universal Pre-K policy in my local public school district could be improved by expanding access to all children, regardless of age. Currently, the policy only provides Universal Pre-K to children who are 4 years old. Expanding access to Universal Pre-K to include 3-year-olds would provide children with a stronger foundation for their education and development.

Additional Considerations:

In addition to expanding access, the Universal Pre-K policy could also be improved by ensuring that all programs are high-quality. This means that programs should be staffed by qualified teachers and that they should provide a comprehensive curriculum that addresses all aspects of child development.

Social workers can play a role in ensuring that Universal Pre-K programs are high-quality by:

  • Providing training to teachers on early childhood development and best practices for teaching preschool

Universal Pre-K

How the Policy Applies to Social Work:

Universal Pre-K is a policy that provides free or low-cost preschool to all children, regardless of income. Social workers play an important role in advocating for Universal Pre-K, as it is a critical component of early childhood development and education. Universal Pre-K can help to close the achievement gap between children from low-income families and children from high-income families. It can also help to reduce the need for special education services later in life.
