Writer’s choice of topic to analyze from Sacred Wilderness by Susan Power

You will write two 4-6 page (1200-1600 word) essays in which you analyze one or more texts on a topic of your choice. If you write about more than one text, you should aim for the upper limit. A comparative paper that is only 4 pages long will be almost certainly be underdeveloped. Your thesis should be an argument [an interpretive claim] about the primary texts, supported with plenty of appropriate, specific evidence from the primary text (i.e., the literary text) and with specific commentary that connects the evidence to your main claims. Evidence need not be quoted, but in a literary analysis of a text, often how something is said is important. A successful paper will be both insightful and well written. In the introduction, identify the primary work or works (title, author, and relevant background) and state your thesis clearly. Body paragraphs should be organized into logical subdivisions, with clear topic sentences and ample support for your main claims (quotations, specific details, your analysis) that directly relates to the main idea of the paragraph. How many body paragraphs you need and the best way to order them will depend on your argument. The conclusion should suggest a wider significance for the discussion.
