Review the Royal Academy of Engineering guide Engineering for Sustainable Development: Guiding Principles
Order Description
“Review the Royal Academy of Engineering guide Engineering for Sustainable Development: Guiding
Principles (It is on Moodle with this assignment sheet), and undertake two separate but linked
tasks:
Task 1: First, write a 700 to 750 word critique. Writing a “critique” involves making and writing
critical judgements after a thorough review. Your aim is to draw useful conclusions and make
personal recommendations. In this respect, what I do not want from you is a summary of the guide –
indeed I will mark you down for including any general description of the Guide because you are
wasting words that should be used for the critique (and I already know the Guide very well having
edited it. What I do want are your comments on the worth of the objective in creating the guide,
and your comments on those aspects of the guide you believe are successful and those that are less
so.
Task 2: Then, second, take any area or subject of your choice from the topics covered by the guide
and, on the basis of some web-based research (which must be properly referenced) but excluding
Wikipedia, write a further approx 750 words proposing improvements and/or updating that you think
would be helpful, were the Guide to be updated. Examples of the areas you might choose include the
review of sustainability, the case studies, the Principles, the desirability of extending its UK
focus to an international context, or the guidance on applying the Principles – the choice is
yours. It can be broad or detailed.
