Research Report/ Energy Audit Proposal Assignment
Introduction: A proposal is part of any formal research report process. It must follow a number of specific rules in order for it to be successful. Your goal with a proposal is to have it approved.
Therefore, it needs to be specific, definitive, clear, and confident.
Task: to write a formal memo proposal that outlines the background, purpose, and method for your large recommendations report.
1. Your proposal should be written in memo format.
2. Its introductory paragraph should provide your name and project focus, include the purpose behind the document (to have the proposal approved), and provide a brief overview of the rest of the
document.
3. A background paragraph(s) should offer a precise, brief narrative of the topic. This paragraph(s) should also include a statement by you that states clearly the importance or impact of this
topic. Why should we care that you are taking it on as the focus of your research report?
4. The next paragraph contains a clear statement on the specific problem or issue related to your broader topic that you are focussing on. This paragraph also needs to contain a clear purpose
statement in which you provide a precise description of your approach to the problem: you discuss the what, the how, the why, and the scope of your project (see the related documents from week 3
for details).
5. The final paragraph provides some details about your methodology: that is, how will you complete what you set out to complete. Note: this requires details about how you will research and write
the report, not how the retrofits will be carried out.
6. The final section includes your bibliography. Follow IEEE format, and be sure to cite these sources appropriately in your proposal.
B) Attached the mini-audit to the proposal. See the other document, “Mini Energy Audit Requirements,” for specific details on compiling this attachment. While the proposal offers details of your
approach to the project, the audit provides the data on which that approach is based.
Length: at least a page single spaced.
Mini Energy-Audit Requirements
Introduction: Your mini-audit will function as an appendix to your research proposal. It contains the data and the justification for the direction you outline in your proposal: therefore, you will
want to make reference to this audit within your proposal. It does not have to be more than two double-spaced pages.
This audit will serve as the basis for the direction you outline in your proposal. The more data that you can gather, the stronger your report will be.
Task: In memo format, please structure the document according to the following requirements
1. General description of the building under investigation: age, square footage, layout (see sec. 2.2 of sample audit).
2. Overview of the energy usage of the building: electrical consumption, and energy required to heat/cool (see sec. 3.0 of the sample audit).
3. Overview of the selected area you are taking on for the report (lighting, building envelope, HVAC, exterior etc…). What is its approx. age, condition (working condition and appearance),
materials if applicable… see the applicable section from “Protocols for Building Condition Assessment” to get a sense of what you should be commenting on in this section. Note: this reference
document is extensive, and I don’t expect you to comment on all of the features listed for your area of the building. This is designed to give you a sense of what can be discussed.
4. Offer your initial thoughts on the general condition of this particular area, and what your thoughts are on a retrofitting strategy (specific materials, equipment replacement, approaches, etc…).
Attach this mini audit to your proposal.
We've chosen a building to do a retrofit to its HVAC system in order to improve efficiency, reduce GHG, and improve health qulity.
Our main goal is to "Improve IAQ (indoor air quality) and to Improve energy efficiency" by using new technologies, such as " Thermally-Driven Air Conditioning" or "Sensor-
Enhanced Ventilation".
In this paper we will
1- show the relationship between IAQ (indoor air quality) and energy efficiency.
2- show how we can improve them in numbers, comparing air quality and energy consumption before and after using new technology.
3- Numbers can be estimated reasonably.
4- use "building M" as the name of the targeted building.
5- bibliography format is "IEEE".
