Research Project

Description

In an approximately 2500 word paper, discuss, analyze and evaluate the social and historical impact of Judaism upon western culture. Center your paper on the following question:

Read the Book of Job. The Bible’s most profound exploration of divine justice and the problem of evil, the Book of Job asks us to reevaluate conventional notions about God and his relationship to humanity. In confronting the fact that many good people suffer undeservedly, why is it necessary – in terms of the book’s theological purpose -- to understand that Job is innocent of wrongdoing and that Yahweh afflicts him “for no reason”? When God appears in the whirlwind discussing Leviathan and Behemoth as his admirable creations, what does his speech show about Yahweh’s attitude toward violent or amoral elements in his cosmos? According to Job’s author, is God both all-good and all-powerful? From God’s perspective, how do we define “good”? Support your answers by citing specific passages from the biblical text.
