Question: First, identify a clinical/practice question you might ask about your current practice.
“As nursing staff on an inpatient psychiatry unit, we are experiencing new concerns on a daily basis due to the COVID pandemic. The medical/nursing
care we provide on a medical unit is straight forward with policies and procedures concerning isolation and care for the patients. However, on an
inpatient psych unit our plan of care involves family interaction, milieu/group therapy and 1:1 support from our nursing staff and therapists. We are
finding ourselves not being able to provide quality psychiatric care to our inpatients due to COVID precautions implemented. How can staff find a
balance in keeping our patients safe during this outbreak yet, also provide the care we need to have the best outcome for the patient?”
Next, examine and discuss the difference between research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement.
Then, describe the differences between quantitative and qualitative research and how each are relevant to clinical practice.
Lastly, identify which of the two research methods (quantitative or qualitative) would best answer your clinical question.
