Research Design & Critique Choosing your research titles    Library Tour – students will be shown around the Sydney Jones library and  how to use its facilities including its website to access electronic sources Understanding how to access and make use of electronic sources and making use of search packages e.g. discovery Week 2    Defining the research problem Understanding research philosophies Student Homework: •    Read Chapters 2 & 4 of Key Text Writing research questions Pair work – place students into topic groups, working on similar themes with topics to collaborate and enhance development of ‘feasible’ questions – emphasise though proposal needs to be individual work.    Peer work – presenting research questions to the rest of the class Formative feedback Week 3    Writing a research Proposal Student Handbook: •    Read Chapter 2 of Key Text    Identifying good and bad examples of research proposals and aware of how their work will be marked Students will be shown examples of draft research proposals and also go through the assessment criteria     Research Proposal activities – what are the key features of a research proposal Research Proposal activities – what are the key features of a research proposal Activity sheet (VLE) The Research steps (exercise 1) Compiling a research project – identifying sequence (exercise 2) Reading exercise (if time allows this). 1:1 Tutorials Students discuss issues they face in preparing the draft proposal (if time allows this). Week 4    Research Design and Methods Qualitative v. Quantitative research Reliability and validity Research Methods Student Homework: •    Read Chapter 3 of Key Text    Key Text Case study study ‘Researching emotional labour’ (pp.204-205).    Computer session/ 1:1 Tutorials Students discuss issues they face in preparing the draft proposal Week 5    Research Ethics Student Homework: •    Read Chapter 6 of Key Text    Case study 6 – the impact of colour on children’s brand choices (p253-255) of core textbook) Students to read and then answer all questions    1:1 Tutorials Students discuss issues they face in preparing the draft proposal Week 6    Quantitative Research Student Handbook: Read Chapter 7 of Key Text    Continuing the planning for first draft of proposal ahead of week 6 submission    Completing draft copy ahead of submission at the end of this week/1.1 tutorials Week 7    Qualitative Research Student Homework: Read Chapters 10 and 13 of Key Text    Key Text Case study 6 ‘Gaining access to business angels network’ (p.205) (Tutor to provide paper copy of this particular case study)    Computer room session/1.1 tutorials Week 8    Critiquing Social Research    Students to receive marks and feedback on their draft proposals 1:1 tutorials, remaining students to tackle Key Text Case study 9 ‘Strategy options in a mature market’ (pp366-386). Read and answer questions Week 9    Critiquing Social Research 2    Computer session / 1:1 tutorials    Students will analyse, discuss and evaluate each others’ research proposal 12.    Research Themes/Topics Students need to select a research theme/topic from the table below and then formulate a research title and at least two research questions that they wish to investigate and answer as part of the process to devising their research proposal.
