Reseach about stereotype threat

Introduction questions;

  1. What is the definition of stereotype threat?
  2. Give an example of stereotype threat occurring in real life that is not provided in the article (i.e. think of something from your own experiences that seems to support the idea of the halo effect)
  3. According to the introduction, why is it important to examine stereotype threat as it affects academic performance (i.e. what are the real world implications of this research)?
  4. What are some examples of stereotype threat from previous research findings that the authors discuss in the introduction?
  5. What is the unique contribution of this particular study of stereotype threat? What does it do that previous studies have not?
  6. What are the hypotheses for the current study?
  7. What do you think was the purpose of this introduction? What points do you think the authors were trying to make/convince you of in this introduction?
  8. What are some tips or things you learned from reading this introduction in terms of how to write a literature review/introduction?
    Method and results questions:
    Study 1:
  9. Who were the participants in the study and how were they chosen? Why do you think it is important to include this information?
  10. Why was it important to select students who had some background in math?
  11. What was the purpose of study 1?
  12. Was anything in this study manipulated by the researchers? If so, what?
  13. What did the researchers measure in this study?
  14. What did the results show? What do these results tell us in the context of stereotype threat? How do they contribute to our knowledge of the phenomenon?
    Study 2:
  15. What is the purpose of study 2? How is it different from study 1?
  16. Why was it important to do study 1 BEFORE study 2? What is the natural logic here?
  17. Was anything manipulated in this study (i.e. was there an independent variable?)? if so, what was the actual manipulation (i.e. what were the levels of the independent variable?)?
  18. What did the researchers find in study 2, and how does that fit in with the stereotype threat theory?
    Study 3:
  19. What is the purpose of study 3? How is it different from study 2?
  20. What did the researchers do differently in this study, and why are these changes important?
  21. What were the findings that emerged from this study?
    General Discussion:
  22. How do the authors explain their lack of significant results, if they had any? Why do they think they did not get the exact results they were expecting?
  23. Related to this last question, what is something they could have done differently to control for that explanation in the future?
  24. In what way do you notice the discussion is different from the introduction? What do you think is the role of the discussion section in a scientific paper?
  25. What are some limitations or confounds that YOU identified in this study?
  26. What would you do differently in the future?
  27. Finally, this is the study we are going to replicate as a class together. If there is ONE thing you can change or add to the experiment as it is currently presented what would it be and WHY?
